Australia had not lost a Test at the Gabba since 1988. India arrived there in January 2021 having lost Jasprit Bumrah, Ravichandran Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja and Hanuma Vihari to injury, and having been bowled out for 36 in Adelaide six weeks earlier.
The last day
Set 328, India began the final day on 4 for none and did not obviously commit to the chase until after lunch. Shubman Gill made 91, Cheteshwar Pujara absorbed 211 balls for 56 and was hit repeatedly for his trouble, and Rishabh Pant finished 89 not out to win it by three wickets with overs to spare.
What it changed
It was the second time in two tours that India had won a series in Australia, and the first time they had done it with a bowling attack largely assembled from whoever was fit. Mohammed Siraj played his third Test in the match and took five wickets in the second innings. Washington Sundar and Shardul Thakur, both making their debuts in the series, had put on 123 for the seventh wicket in the first.
Depth is usually talked about as insurance. That week it was the whole argument.
